Painting, Passion and Politics – State Hermitage at Somerset House
Exhibition of treasures loaned from Russia’s premier museum the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg: thirty-four masterpieces from the collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin, Murillo and Claude. Assembled by Britain’s first Prime Minister, all were sold to Catherine The Great by his eccentric grandson amid much controversy in 1778 and were returned to England for the first time in over 200 years.
